2008 Breeding Projects

The 2008 breeding season has come to and end for me this year with only one pair being successful. I'm really excited about all 12 of the Matilda x Rodney eggs that hatched successfully. This should be a great Lemontree/OS-HY x high yellow/tri-color Biak outcross pairing. ______________________________________________________________________________

I am starting a reservation list for those interested in purchasing Matilda x Rodney offspring. I expect to offer 8 offspring from this pairing if all of the 12 eggs hatch successfully. See below for more information on this exciting clutch. Please email me for reservations.

Matilda x Rodney

Background: Rodney is a well-known proven breeder of high yellow and tri-color offspring. He will be paired up with Matilda, full sibling to Jackie, from the Lemontree x Biak pairing of Switch x Blondie by Jack Sadovnik. These should be some stunning high yellow babies with strong OS HY lines, Turmezie Lemontree lines, and new Biak blood. This will be Matilda's first breeding and I hope to prove out her ability to pass on high yellow genetics. Estimated prices starting at $1000.

Status: Placed together in December with several copulations observed. Matilda has spent a lot of time grounded and Rodney is currently in shed (12/31). After Rodney's shed, copulations have continued. Matilda seems a little more comfortable with Rodney's presence and is finally perched again. She looks a little swollen but is still on food at this time.

Update 2/10/08: Matilda refused food last night and is basking under the heat. She looks to be developing follicles and I hope to see an ovulation from her in the next month or so!

Update 3/3/08: Matilda ovulated 3/1-3/2/08 and it was large and normal looking.

Update 4/3/08: Matilda's prelay shed was on 3/31 and I expect eggs sometime the week of April 13th.

Update 4/17/08: Matilda laid 13 good looking eggs on the morning of 4/15/08. They are all doing well in the incubator. Hatch date is early June. Scroll down to see more pictures of her and the eggs.

Update 5/5/08: One egg went bad but the remaining 12 eggs all look very strong and healthy. A reservation list is now being started for those interested in aquiring offspring from this pairing. Email me to be placed on the list.

Update 6/5/08: The eggs are hatching!

UPDATE 6/7/08: All 12 babies hatched sucessfully. They weighed between 10.2g to 13g and all of them look great. After their first shed I'll take pictures of them and decide on my holdbacks. The others will be offered up for sale.

Sissy x Perch

Background: Perch is a proven highland-type male who was paired up with a Sorong-type in 2005 to produce some awesome blue dorsal stripe babies. Perch has a significant amount of white and I hope Sissy's Aru-type background will enhance this trait. Sissy's spectacular hormonal blue transition after her 2006 clutch is an added bonus to thie pairing. She continues to be a vistor's favorite in my collection due to her gentle nature and bright blue coloration. This should be a mixed yellow and maroon clutch with estimated prices for yellows starting at $450 and maroons $650.

Status:
Perch was placed with Sissy on 10/18/07 with many copulations observed. Sissy is now off food as of 11/18 and things are looking very promising.

Update 2/10/08: If Sissy ovulated over Christmas then her window for a pre-lay shed has gone and passed without a shed. I honestly have no idea what's going on with her at this point. She is powder blue and spends most of her days basking with her coils rolled. She's still refusing food and acting gravid. I will give another update as soon as she gives me an idea of what's going on.

Update 4/3/08: After speaking with a very well respected breeder I believe that Sissy may still lay eggs for me and has completely disregarded the "norm" for breeding. Will the eggs be good? We'll just have to wait and see! She has continued to stay powder blue and she shed on 3/23, which I now believe was a pre-lay shed. As of 4/3, she is acting very uncomfortable and is a tad grumpy. I hope that my next update will be to annouce the arrival of good eggs.

See more details about this on the Chondro Forum's Breeder Forum HERE.

Update 4/7/08: The good news is that Sissy is doing well and really was gravid and not egg bound. She laid 17 eggs this morning but only two appear to be weakly viable*. They are in the incubator so we'll see how they progress. *4/17/08 Only one egg is viable and still looking good.

UPDATE: The lone egg went bad during the 3 week of incubation and didn't make it. I hope to try this pairing again in the future.

Freckles x Phoenix

Freckles

Background: This is a first time breeding for both of these young chondros. Freckles is an Aru-type with melanistic scales scattered down her body. Phoenix is a beautiful melanistic male with bright yellow triangles. I expect a combination of yellow and maroon neonates from this much anticipated melanistic-Aru pairing. Estimated prices starting at $750.

Status 3/2/08:
I will be giving Freckles one more try with another male when she completes her shed cycle this week.

UPDATE 4/3/08: I tried three different males with Freckles this season and none of them showed obvious interest in her. She did settle down and appear willing with the final male placed in with her but I never observed any copulations. I hope to try her again next year.
